QB - Houston Oilers


Warren Moon was the quarterback for the Houston Oilers from 1984-1993. Moon was a nine-time Pro-Bowler and the 1990 NFL Most Valuable Player.  In 2006 Moon was the first African- American quarterback inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Warren was raised by a single mother.

ANDRE WARE

1989 Heisman Trophy Winner
QB - University of Houston


Andre Ware was the 1989 Heisman Trophy winner and quarterback for the University of Houston. He was the first African-American quarterback to receive this honor.  He was a first-round draft pick for the Detroit Lions and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2004. Andre was raised by a single mother.

VINCE YOUNG

Former Madison High School, University of Texas & NFL Quarterback

Vince Young was one of the greatest Houston high school quarterbacks of all time.  He was a National Champion and Heisman runner-up at the University of Texas and a first round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans and is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame. 

Vince was raised by a single mother.

DESHAUN WATSON

QB - Houston Texans

2018 Pro-Bowl

Deshaun Watson is the current starting quarterback for the Houston Texans. He was a first-round draft pick, a two-time Heisman Trophy finalist and Davey O'Brien Award recipient.  He led the Clemson Tigers to a National Championship in 2016. Deshaun was raised by a single mother.

 

SCHOLARSHIP OVERVIEW

Brothers in Arms, formed under the leadership of Houston quarterbacks Andre Ware, Warren Moon, Deshaun Watson and Vince Young, are proud to offer financial assistance to graduating high school senior student-athletes who wish to attend a college or university.  This one-time award will be given to  minority students who displays leadership qualities, play a high school sport,

and are being raised by a single parent.

 

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

  • Participate in a high school sport

  • Must not be receiving an athletic scholarship from any college or university

  • Reside in a single parent home environment

  • Represents diversity

  • Current grade point average of 3.0 or higher

  • Open to all majors

  • Demonstrate leadership ability through a variety of measures

  • Demonstrate a strong community service record

  • Demonstrate outstanding financial need

  • U.S. Citizen residing in the Greater Houston Area

  • Must be available to attend Houston Sports Awards event on January 21, 2020 to accept scholarship. (Tickets provided)

  • Essay:  What does diversity mean to you and how has it affected or impacted your life?

  • Candidates selected for the next phase of the application process will be interviewed
